The Story
This ornate game box housed 10 player pieces and bone dice. As I drew this study it became evident that the maker of the relief imagery was an exceptional artist. The most subtle of details in the Bull’s muscles and faces are evident. A serene, gentle scene is depicted, with these powerful creatures sitting in relaxed repose. I felt the imagery was simple but powerful.
The era this is from had trade between great nations spanning from India to Spain, and objects such as this must have been prized and cherished. The game is called “20 Squares” and is derived closely from quite possibly the oldest known game known to man, “The Royal Game of Ur”. The game itself is complex, and apparently very popular for over 1000 years. More can be learned about this game here.
